For the first time this season Star lined up with a 2-2-1 formation hoping to exploit a defence which was renown for leaking goals. With Atlantic Star’s good defence it looked like it should be an important win, on paper at least.<br />Star struggled to settle early on, unaided by some terrible refereeing decisions and a no nonsense physical approach by the opposition. It was clearly unsettling a few players as both Maguire and Dickens had altercations with the referees, but they were to give no ground on an evening where they must have had some money riding on the outcome.<br /> <br />Despite the difficult circumstances, Star exploited the extra money as E&Y had a player dismissed for structure violation. With the best move of the match starting on the right hand side, the ball found it’s way to Maguire who teed up Dickens to finish low and hard past the keeper.<br />At the back the red and whites were coping well despite the heavy handed tactics and they held firm going into the interval.<br /> <br />Two goals in three minutes in the second half put Star firmly in command of the game. The first Maguire battled his way down the right and placed his shot to the side of the keeper. A minute later a first time shot with the inside of his foot looped over the top of the keeper to give Star at the time what seemed an insurmountable advantage. The goal itself must be amongst the contenders for goal of the season.<br /> <br />A deflected shot past Murray gave E&Y some belief that the game wasn’t over and this was the start of the horror show for Atlantic Star. Another abysmal decision by the referee calling hand ball against Carlowe when he was dribbling the ball forward gave Old Man a free kick just inside their own half. Quick thinking by the opposition saw them break forward and they made no mistake with an unchallenged shot to bring it back to three two. The assistant manager was keen to stop the flow and called desperately for a time out but unbeknown to him, Murray had called one in the first half and there was no way to stop E&Y in their tracks. A rare defensive lapse from Jack saw the E&Y right winger accelerate down the right and he made no mistake to even things up.<br /> <br />Disheartened by this blow, Star failed to get any rhythm back and their difficult 2009 continues. The biggest consolation was the other results from around the league. Their were setbacks for both Coconut Joes and UBS to Maples and Paramount respectively, and Brickhouse were unfortunate to lose to a last minute striker from Star’s next opponents RCC.
